Embedding Vimeo videos in Gradual

Outline of the process and necessary settings to successfully add videos hosted in Vimeo to Gradual

Updated this week

This resource summarizes how you can add video content that is hosted on Vimeo within Gradual. This will cover the necessary setting options in Vimeo as well as common errors and troubleshooting steps.

Adding Video Content from Vimeo

When adding a new piece of content to Gradual as a video, you will still need to host that content on a hosting site like Vimeo. In the content creation page in Gradual, you'll be asked to drop the video link as one of the required fields. Gradual will then automatically display the Vimeo player.

*Please note that some of the guidance and screenshots below may change based on updates to Vimeo and their services. We do our best to keep documentation up to date, but changes to third party services may not be reflected in our documentation.

How to find the correct video link:

From the video page of the video you'd like to embed, click the "share" button in the top right corner. This will open a sidebar which will contain the necessary settings to be adjusted.

The "Link" displayed on this page is the link you will use when embedding a video into a piece of content in Gradual.

Vimeo visibility settings:

In order to have your video display successfully, the video privacy settings may need to be adjusted. Depending on your account defaults, you video may be added as "unlisted" automatically. Unlisted videos cannot be embedded in Gradual. You'll need to change the privacy settings to either:

Hide from Vimeo: Private on your account, but embeddable anywhere

or

Public: Anyone on the internet can view

In most cases we recommend setting your videos to "Hide from Vimeo"

Restricting video visibility to only Gradual:

If you want to ensure that the video is only viewable on your Gradual community or other specific domains, we can adjust that as well.

On the same sharing menu in Vimeo, click the "embed" button. This will allow you to adjust where the video can be played if embedded. You can add a number of domains to this list. For example, if I want the video to be viewable in my community and on my website, I would enter both domains (e.g. community.gradual.com and gradual.com).

If set up this way with the video privacy set to "Hide from Vimeo" and the embed options listed to specific domains, the video will only be playable if on those domains and even if someone were to get the direct link to the video in Vimeo, would not be able to view the video.

There may be bad actors that can circumvent these precautions and Gradual cannot be held responsible for private or classified content being accessed when hosted on a third party.

Common Errors

Video error: "Sorry we're have a little trouble"

This error is returned by Vimeo and is most often related to the video's visibility and privacy settings.

To troubleshoot, ensure that the video share settings are set to either "Hide from Vimeo" or "Public".

Video Error: "Hey There! To play your video here, change its privacy settings to it can be embedded on: [your.community.domain]"

This error is returned by Vimeo when the location the video is embedded is not in the allowed list of domains.

To troubleshoot, add your community domain(s) via the "embed" settings within Vimeo.
