Highlight your members' special roles, honors, and accomplishments with a small sticker image on their profile avatar throughout the community! This is a great way to showcase your ambassadors, customers, or admins.
Overview
Profile badges are special stickers on the bottom corner of a member’s avatar that display their key role in the community. They appear on the members' profiles throughout the community from the People page, to the Forum page, and on the profile detail page of the members.
Admins can customize the sticker graphic or select from a list of available badges in the dashboard. They can be assigned automatically from role assignment, or manually one-by-one from the dashboard. Communities can have up to 50 badges to assign to their members, but each profile can only show one badge.
Only dashboard admins can make these assignments, collaborators (club admins, content, or event permissions) cannot.
These badges are separate from contribution badges as these appear on the avatar of the user, versus in their profile. Each member can only have one profile badge but can earn and display multiple contribution bags.
Available badges & stickers
Profile badges can be pulled from the contributor badges in your dashboard (preset or custom), assigned by admin roles, or you can build custom profile badges to fit your community needs and membership.
Profile Badges Tab
In the dashboard, from the Members tab, admins can see all profile badges, make changes to their names, graphics, and descriptions and take action on their visibility or assigned members.
Visibility
Visible badges can be assigned to members and will appear on the users' profiles on the front end.
Hidden badges can be assigned to members but will not appear on the users' profiles on the front end. The system will still show that the badge is assigned (and continue to note users' who have that badge assigned), but hide it from the front end.
In line with each profile badge, the system will show how many assigned members have that badge, and allow you to assign badges to members. Learn more about that process below.
Preset/Default badges
By default, some badges related to community roles are loaded in the dashboard in the Profile Badges tab. The titling and verbiage of these badges can be customized, but their assignment is attributed to roles in the dashboard. These badges can be for community admins, creators or collaborators, club admins, and forum moderators.
Customizing these badges
Make changes to the name, description, and badge graphic by clicking on the edit icon, and changing these details.
Adding to profiles
Once the badges are created, you must enable and mark them as visible to assign and add them to users' profiles. Learn more about adding these preset profile badges to members' avatars below.
Contributor badges
You can use badges from the Contributors badging module as profile badges. These profile badges are not automatically assigned when a member earns the contributor badge, but you can opt to show the badge in both places for a member.
Note: The contributor feature must be enabled in your dashboard for you to choose from contributor badges. If you do not see 'Choose from contributor badges' as an option when adding profile badges, reach out to the Gradual team to enable that feature.
Customizing these badges
These profile badges will use the name, description, and badge graphic from the contributor badges. You can make changes to these at any time from the badges menu item.

Custom badges & stickers
You can customize and upload badges with a unique name, description, and image or pick from a list of preset badge graphics in the dashboard. These custom badges can be assigned and added to profiles via the dashboard.
Once the badges are created, you must enable and mark them as visible to assign and add them to users' profiles. Learn more about adding these custom profile badges to members' avatars below.
Assigning/Adding badges & stickers to member profiles
Admins can add badges to members' profiles in the dashboard by assigning them certain roles or manually adding the badge to their profile.
Currently, only dashboard administrators can make these assignments:
Collaborators (club admins, content, or event permissions) cannot add badges from their dashboard
Community members cannot add badges to their profile from the front end
Assigning roles
When assigning some roles in the dashboard, a badge can be automatically added to the user's profile account via the dashboard process. Admins can opt to have these badges appear on the member's profiles when making the assignments or skip that step during the role assignments.
Community roles profile badges
'Community Admin': Dashboard administrators
If visible and enabled, this badge could assign the Community Admin profile badge to anyone added as a community dashboard administrator in Permissions.
'Creator': Collaborators
If visible and enabled, this badge could assign the Creator profile badge to anyone added as a collaborator on events and content via the collaborators feature or in via Event Permissions.
'Club Admin': Group or Chapter administrators
If the Club feature is enabled, and this badge is visible and enabled, this badge could assign the Club Admin profile badge to anyone added as an admin to a chapter, interest group, or club.
Forum Moderator
If the forum feature is enabled, and this badge is visible and enabled, this badge could assign the Forum Moderator profile badge to anyone added as a forum moderator in forum settings.
Adding community roles profile badges
You can add these profile badges on the member profile, within the Profile Badges tab, or by assigning the roles.
Note that the badge(s) must be enabled and visible to add to users' profiles.
By assigning their role
The profile badge must be visible for this assignment to work. Navigate to the Profile Badges tab to toggle the visibility on for the badge(s) you'd like to assign.
Navigate to the role assignment tab - Permissions, Collaborators, Clubs or Forum Settings.
Assign the member to the role
For collaborators, a role (Event Manager, Content Admin, etc.) must be assigned for the badge option to appear. Simply adding them to the Collaborators list will not assign them a badge.
Confirm adding the badge and the permissions to the member
You can add only the permission to the member if you'd like and the profile badge will not appear on their avatar
Here is an example of the flow when assigning a forum moderator:
From the Profile Badges tab
The user must have the assigned permissions to grant them access to the community role profile badges.
Navigate to the Profile Badges tab
In line with the badge, select the edit icon and 'Assign members'
In the pop up, find the member you'd like to assign the profile badge and select 'Assign'

In the pop up, select 'Assign Member' button
Find the member in the list, or search for the member and select 'Assign' to confirm
From member profile
The user must have the assigned permissions to grant them access to the community role profile badges.
Navigate to the member's profile, and select the small + icon over their avatar.
Choose the profile badge you'd like assigned, and select 'Assign badge'
Note: Changing the roles will prompt the admin to decide which badge to assign to the profile, as only one profile badge can be assigned per member
Manually adding badges (Contributor Profile Badges & Custom Profile Badges)
You can manually add badges to users' profiles via the dashboard from the member's profile or via the Profile Badges tab for contributor profile and custom profile badges.
Note that the badge(s) must be enabled and visible to add to users' profiles.
From the Profile Badges tab
For Contributor Profile badges: The user must have the assigned permissions to grant them access to these badges.
Navigate to the Profile Badges tab
In line with the badge, select the edit icon and 'Assign members'
In the pop up, find the member you'd like to assign the profile badge and select 'Assign'

In the pop up, select 'Assign Member' button
Find the member in the list, or search for the member and select 'Assign' to confirm
From member profile
For Contributor Profile badges: The user must have the assigned permissions to grant them access to these badges.
Navigate to the member's profile, and select the small + icon over their avatar.
Choose the profile badge you'd like assigned, and select 'Assign badge'
Automated Assignment
Currently, we only support manually assigning badges in the dashboard but in future phases of this feature, you will be able to assign via API, bulk upload, etc.
Note: If you have a longer list of members who need profile badges assigned, please reach out to the Gradual team for assistance in bulk uploading.
Removing or replacing badges & stickers
Admins can remove or replace the profile badges and stickers in the dashboard. As a reminder, only one badge can be assigned per member.
Hiding a badge across the platform
If you'd like to hide a badge from all profiles where it is assigned (on the front end), you can toggle off the visibility of the badge in the Profile Badges tab. Members with this badge will retain it, but it will not be displayed.
Deleting a badge from the platform
If you'd like to delete and remove the badge from all profiles and from the system, you can delete it in the Profile Badges tab. Once the badge is deleted, it will be automatically removed from all members with this badge.
Community role badges cannot be deleted but can be hidden.
Deleting creator (contributor) badges does not affect the collaborator/contributor's status, it will just clear the badge from its assigned users.
Removing or replacing a badge from individual profiles
Community roles profile badges
You can remove or replace the below profile badges by re-assigning or changing the below community roles:
'Community Admin': Dashboard administrators
'Creator': Collaborators
'Club Admin': Group or Chapter administrators
Forum Moderator
Navigate to the role assignment tab - Permissions, Collaborators, Clubs or Forum Settings.
Remove the role assignment to the member, or assign them to another role
Confirm changing the badge and the permissions to the member
From the Profile Badges tab
Navigate to the Profile Badges tab
In line with the badge, select the edit icon and 'Assign members'
In the pop up, find the member you'd like to assign the profile badge and select 'Assign'
Confirm the change to the badge as it will replace their badge
