Adding DMARC Records

How to add DMARC records for email sending

Updated over a week ago

This article walks through how to add DMARC Records for email sending. DMARC record configuration is important for enhancing email security and improving email deliverability. Big companies like Microsoft and Google are making DMARC records a requirement to send to emails built within their platforms.

Most of these policies are already added as part of your domain and Gradual email sender setup. However, DMARC policies may not be present and should be added for your domain. These changes will only need to be made to your sender domain, which is found under the Gradual System Settings:

To improve the deliverability of important emails being sent from Gradual, please follow the steps below to add the appropriate DMARC DNS records for your sender domain.

1. Locate your DNS management settings: These are usually found within your domain registrar or domain host (Some common providers are Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Google Domains, and Namecheap)

2. Within your domain host/registrar, head into the tab titled "DNS". In some providers, you may see the option "Domain Manager," “Domain list” or something similar. (Note: In this example we show Cloudflare).

3. Go into the “Records” tab. Depending on your platform, you may see the records after you select the domain.

4. Select the domain you use for the sender domain to (E.g. if your sender email is [email protected], the domain to modify would be gradual.com)

5. In the tab where the DNS records live for your domain, click ‘add record’.

6. Choose the Record Type: TXT Record

7. Fill in these Details:

  • Host Name: _dmarc

  • TXT value/content: v=DMARC1; p=none

8. Save the Changes.

9. Wait for DNS propagation: It can take some time (from a few minutes to 48 hours) for the changes to propagate across the internet.

Once the DNS propagates, you're all set!
