System moderation tools are at work across your entire community. The profanity word filtering and spam limits apply across the platform, in forum discussions, channels, messages, and event Q&A/chats. These tools can be modified and customized to fit your community's needs and style from the System Settings tab in the dashboard.
Auto-moderation tools and settings
Gradual has deployed several native moderation tools that automatically moderate discussions and text so they are appropriate, and work to deter spamming:
Basic profanity filter moderation will return an error to the user if their text contains profanity
Gradual is currently using a standard available library of profane terms in English.
You can add custom words or phrases to the spam filter or remove certain words from the filter as well. Follow the instructions below.
Basic content filter moderation will return an error to the user if the text contains blanks or spaces only
Rate limits moderation will return an error to the user if they submit a duplicated post in quick succession
Filter moderation will block all ASCII text and return an error to the user
System moderation settings
You can control profanity filtering across the entire platform from within Settings β System Settings. Changes made here will affect moderation across your entire platform: forum, channels, messaging content comments, and event chat.
You can add words to the auto-moderated list, or add words as exceptions that would be excluded from the profanity filter and will not be moderated.
Custom word list
You can add words to the profanity filter across your platform. Those words will be added to the word list and will be moderated and users will be blocked from posting or sending them across the platform. Dashboard admins can add them in the system settings tab in the dashboard.
An example is or use case is a competitor's product or name. This would not be on Gradual's profanity word list, but may be a word or phrase you want moderated or blocked from being used.
Exceptions
You can add words to be excluded from the profanity filter across your platform. Those words will not be moderated and will not block the user from posting or sending. Dashboard admins can add them in the system settings tab in the dashboard.
An example is or use case is the word 'breast': this is included on Gradual's profanity word list, but if your community is health care focused, this word should be added as an exception and should not be moderated or blocked from being used.
Default Profanity Word List
The profanity word list Gradual uses is not accessible from the dashboard but can be shared by request. Trigger warning: this list included very aggressive words, and we advise you to proceed with caution.
