Moderation Overview

This is an overview of the Moderation tab and the tools within it.

Updated over a week ago

The Moderation tab is now its own menu item in the dashboard, giving community admins a centralized place for managing moderation across the different parts of the community, including forums and events.

IMPORTANT: A number of existing features have been moved into the new Moderation tab, and several new features have also been added. It will take time for us to update all of our documentation to reflect these changes.

Profanity Words

The Profanity Words subtab functions the same as before but has been relocated here. The profanity filter applies across the entire community — forums, channels, event chats, messages, and Q&A. A default list of blocked English words is provided, and admins can add or make exceptions for words as needed.

For detailed instructions on managing profanity filters, see our Profanity Filter Guide.

Forum Moderation

The Forum Moderation tab provides control over how discussions are managed. It includes three sections: Auto Moderation, Auto Ban, and Exempt.

Auto Moderation

  • Content Filters: Manage profanity filtering, block email domains, and enforce PII rules.

  • Adjust moderation intensity for discrimination, sexual content, and violence using sliders set to Lenient, Standard, or Strict.

Example thresholds using Sightengine:

  • Sexual Content:

    • Lenient → allows suggestive terms, blocks explicit sexual content.

    • Strict → blocks anything suggestive or explicit.

  • Violence:

    • Standard → blocks high-confidence violent text/images.

    • Strict → blocks anything moderately violent.

  • Discrimination:

    • Lenient → blocks clear hate speech.

    • Strict → blocks both slurs and borderline derogatory language.

  • Anti-Spam: Control posting frequency with sliders for lenient, standard, or strict. Open the rules table for exact limits (e.g., number of posts allowed per time period).

Auto Ban

Set automatic bans based on defined thresholds. The rules table provides the most accurate and up-to-date criteria for when bans are triggered.

Exempt

Exempt specific members or member types (e.g., admins, moderators, trusted members) from moderation filters.

Event Channel Moderation

The Event Channel Moderation tab works much like forum moderation, but with settings tailored to events and chats:

  • Profanity filtering applies universally.

  • Blocked domains apply specifically to event chats.

  • Anti-spam moderation is available.

  • Auto ban rules differ slightly, but the rules table explains event specific thresholds.

Banned Records

The Banned Records subtab provides a log of all bans across forums and events, including the reason for the ban. This log helps admins track repeat offenders and revoke bans that are not needed. All bans are temporary and will be lifted after a period of time.

For community health, we recommend using limited approval for repeat offenders as it restricts activity while allowing some visibility. Learn more about setting members to limited approval here
